This week’s task required me to choose a creative activity I enjoy doing and do it every day for a week.
I chose to draw different vehicles each day for this task as perspective is something I struggle with when drawing. As vehicles are comprised of mostly hard surface and rigid shapes, they were suitable subjects for improving my drawing skills. Even though the task only spanned a week, I noticed a gradual improvement in both my perspective skills and my ability to observe underlying 3D forms.
For day one I chose to draw a vintage car in pencil. Drawing this car helped me focus on proportion and perspective. Their boxy silhouettes and rounded fenders made it easier to break down the geometry.
For day two I drew a pickup truck using a ballpoint pen. I found this to be much more difficult than using a pencil as I was unable to erase my mistakes and less free to draw construction boxes. Though drawing with a pen was challenging, I found it helped me slowdown and spend more time analysing the forms before committing to the drawing.
On day 3 initially tried drawing a truck in pen again. However, I found the subject to be too difficult and reverted to using a pencil. To help me break down the form I draw many construction boxes around the major forms of the truck.
Day four I drew another truck in pencil. I chose this truck for it’s more simplistic forms. While making this drawing I treated it like I was using pen and avoided erasing as much as possible. This helped me improve my line confidence as well as forcing me to think about what I was drawing instead of drawing on autopilot. As well as this, the challenge also be inspired to draw more in general, as can be seen by the miscellaneous drawings on the page.
I chose to draw a care with more organic forms for day five to challenge myself. As I was not confident enough, yet I used pencil again. I started with a side view of the car to help me understand the car’s shape better. Though drawing this car was hard, I found it enjoyable to draw something a little different.
Day six I decided to draw an excavator. I wanted to challenge myself with new forms and to increase the difficulty I drew this in pen. Drawing the scoop was fun and I’m proud of how it turned out considering I drew it without a sketch.
For the final day I drew a bulldozer. I believe this drawing could’ve been better and had more time spent on it. The vehicle seemed quite simple which led me to draw on autopilot more and not consider perspective as much.
Reflection
This week of daily drawing helped me build confidence in perspective and form. Repetition made me more aware of how vehicles are constructed and how their shapes relate in 3D space. Even though the drawings varied in difficulty, each one taught me something new about observation, structure, and intentional mark‑making.
